You Missed it! Event Recap: Western’s Women In Leadership First Annual Conference

On Sunday, March 20th , the WWIL Club welcomed over 200 members of the university community to our 1st Annual Conference, which is an interactive learning and professional development event that offered a chance to hear inspirational speeches and network with Scotiabank, RBC, CPP Investment Board, ROI Revolution, Inc., Deloitte and more! There was workshops on networking, Linkedin and investments, followed by a formal dinner with live music.

Through inspirational stories and practical advice, the focus was to empower the audience to take on challenges and seize opportunities to achieve personal and professional success. Topics of discussion centered around identifying opportunities for success, entrepreneurship, and achieving one’s goals with a focus on leadership.

Some of the influential individuals who spoke at the conference were Timothy Seward- Founder & CEO of ROI Revolution, Bonnie Crombie – Mayor of Mississauga, Samra Zafar -Public speaker and a social entrepreneur with a touching story and Brian Crombie – CFO and Director of Steel Rail Entertainment and Evolution Optics.

4:20 – 5:00pm Keynote Speaker #1 Timothy Seward

Timothy leads ROI Revolution in its mission to drive growth for brands, retailers, and ecommerce merchants with its results-driven digital marketing technology and services. Timothy founded the agency in June of 2002. With his extensive marketing and retail background, he has spoken at industry ecommerce and retail events including IRCE, is a frequent guest lecturer at North Carolina State University’s College of Management, and has contributed to key industry publications including Internet Retailer.  He has also partnered with Entrepreneur Press to publish Ultimate Guide to Amazon Advertising.

Timothy is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.

Samra Zafar is an award-winning international speaker, bestselling author, consultant, educator, and social entrepreneur who advocates for equity, inclusion, and human rights.

Her book, A Good Wife: Escaping the Life I Never Chose, became an instant bestseller and was named as a 2019 Book of the Year for Canadian Nonfiction by the CBC. It is now being published internationally and adapted to a TV series.

Samra has spoken on dozens of stages, including at TEDx, Yale University, UNICEF, Amnesty International, Art of Leadership, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, as well as for many corporations, universities, and non-profits.

In 2019, Samra was recognized as one of Canada’s “Top 100 Most Powerful Women” and as a “Top 25 Canadian Immigrant”.

8:00 – 8:45pm Keynote Speaker #3 Mayor Bonnie Crombie

Canadian politician who is best recognized for having served as the Mayor of Mississauga, Ontario. She is known for her association with the Libertarian party and also served as the Mississauga City Councillor.

Since her election as Mayor in 2014, Mayor Crombie has worked diligently to attracted major economic development to the City all while managing the growth of Canada’s sixth largest city. Prior to her election as Mayor, Bonnie served as the Ward 5 City Councillor, and previous to that, as Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville.

Before entering public service, Mayor Crombie enjoyed a twenty-year career in business. Mayor Crombie has an MBA from York University’s Schulich School of Business and earned a Corporate Director’s Certificate from the Institute of Corporate Directors at the Rotman School of Management.

8:45 – 9:30pm Workshop: Brian Crombie

Brian Crombie has an MBA from Harvard Business School 1988, an HBA from the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario 1982, and is completing a DBA from ISM Paris 2018. Brian graduated a Baker Scholar with High Distinction from Harvard and Dean’s List from Western.

Brian Crombie is currently the Acting CFO for a Sports team, and part time CFO for a development stage pharmaceutical company and an entertainment company where he also provides strategic, business development and financial advisory services. He has been operating Crombie Capital Partners for the past five years providing strategic, financial, M&A and advisory services for these clients and several others in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, alternative energy, sports and entertainment, private education and other industries in Canada, the United States and Ukraine. Brian has worked for firms, Venture Capitalists, Law Firms and Private Equity Investors.

Brian Crombie has 20 years of corporate experience, a depth of knowledge in all facets of finance, strategic planning and corporate / business development for a wide breadth of companies in several industries. Brian has deep political, community and charitable involvement as well.
