International Women’s Day! Celebrating Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Happy International Women’s Day 2018! Today we are honouring Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Appointed as an Associate Justice by President Bill Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second female ever to be confirmed to the United States Supreme Court. Legal observers have recognized Ginsburg for her forceful decisions in monumental cases such as United States v. Virginia, which struck down the male-only admission policy of the Virginia Military Institute, and Olmstead v. L.C., which held that individuals with mental disabilities can live in the community rather than institutions.

Ginsburg was one of the few women in her field of civil procedure, which she taught at Rutgers and Columbia law schools. Throughout her career, she advocated for gender equality and women’s rights. It is believed that her officiation of the wedding of Michael Kaiser and John Roberts made her the first Supreme Court justice to officiate a same-sex wedding. Her efforts to secure more equal rights for women in a legal sense makes her an important woman in history.
