International Women’s Day! Celebrating Bell Hooks

Gloria Jean Watkins, who writes under the pen name bell hooks, is a scholar best known for her writings on intersectionality of race and gender, and how these dimensions contribute to the oppression and domination of women of colour.

hooks raised the issue of how previous writings in feminism failed to address the multi-dimensional nature of the oppression of women. Intersectionality considers how one’s gender, class, race, and sexuality may result in differing experiences of heterosexism, patriarchy, racism, and class oppression.

As hooks argues, focusing on one discrete aspect of a person — such as one’s gender — is insufficient for understanding someone’s identity, because the experience of being a woman incorporates far more than just gender.
